I was inspired to do this series by a visit to
the river when the fish were spawning. The experience was intense. The
colors of the dead and struggling fish, the air filled with the sounds of
excited predator birds, the smell…!
This is an impressionist image. You can see the fish in the shadows of the
water and the reflection of the sky and the cool green trees. I used silver
for the sparkles of sunlight. I drew the network of lines over the image to
represent the ripples on the water and to suggest the cause of the salmon’s
demise.
The special glass that I formulated for this series will ‘flourese’ or glow
when exposed to sunlight. This really adds the feeling of the fish
shimmering just beneath the surface.
